ISG Jackson Victoria Arcade refurbishment

An ISG Jackson product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Sep 5, 2008

ISG Jackson Special Projects complete fast-track regeneration project at Victoria Arcade shopping area in Great Yarmouth for client Miller Developments .

The town's retail provision is currently undergoing a GBPmulti-million renaissance, with sister company ISG Jackson currently on site building a GBP7.8 million extension to the Market Gates Shopping Centre, also for Miller Developments .

As one of the town centre's principal tourist attractions, the Victorian shopping arcade has received a sympathetic internal refurbishment, with ISG Jackson Special Projects carrying out critical repair work to the impressive glazed roof, whilst replacing broken stained glass windows throughout the building.

New shop signage has been introduced within the arcade and general decorative works carried out to enhance the shopping experience for consumers.

Externally, the contractor has installed contemporary glazed entrance structures with feature lighting at either end of the arcade.

The contrast between these modern Tate-inspired rectangular architectural structures and the original Victorian glazed arcade works particularly well, providing an appealing retail destination for discerning shoppers.

Health and safety regulations required ISG Jackson Special Projects to undertake work to replace glazing on the arcade's roof out of normal working hours.

A specialist crane and large scissor lift were brought onto site to carry out this work, which required road closures and diversions at this busy intersection, near to the bus station and taxi rank.

By working closely with the Highways Agency and devising a robust traffic management plan, the contractor was able to minimise disruption during this important phase of the project.

Michael Manning, divisional director for ISG Jackson Special Projects, commented: "It is especially poignant that ISG Jackson has been working simultaneously in Great Yarmouth within one of the oldest retail areas - Victoria Arcade and also one of the most modern - the Market Gates Shopping Centre".

"We are confident that this programme of restoration and improvement works at Victoria Arcade will not only preserve the heritage, but also help increase footfall to this bustling retail arcade for many years to come.".
