Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Apr 24, 2009

Cladding specialists James and Taylor has been commissioned for a second project as part of the ongoing award-winning restoration of St Pancras station in London.

James and Taylor will work on the St Pancras Chambers the stunning hotel and apartment renovation of a historic London landmark.

The company's expertise in specialist brick cladding gave James and Taylor the edge to help complete the landmark project - a collaboration between Richard Griffiths Architects and RHWL Architects.

For stage two James and Taylor will use a facing brick that has been specially developed to match the existing brickwork.

Each brick is hand-thrown and bench moulded using traditional hand-moulding techniques.

Facings will be colour-blended to replicate the existing brickwork.

It is the specialist nature of this project that so appeals to James and Taylor, building on the award-winning success of stage one.

The renovation project involves the refurbishment of the St Pancras hotel; one of the 19th Century's most celebrated buildings.

Positioned at the termination of the great train shed, it's a vision of Gothic splendor designed by Victorian architect George Gilbert Scott.

Richard Hill from Richard Griffiths Architects comments: "St Pancras Chambers is a remarkable renovation project and one where the exactitude of the brick faandccedil;ade will be key to its success".

"James and Taylor's history in the brick industry, not to mention their passion for it, will no doubt play a crucial role in the overall delivery of the scheme".

Pete Mulholland, director of James and Taylor comments: "The original St Pancras project was of great personal and professional interest".

"It's fantastic to be involved again on the next phase of this dynamic award-winning project".

"St Pancras Chambers offers challenges of its own however, including a very specific brickwork that needs to be replicated perfectly to remain in keeping with the original".

The bricks are hand-made for James and Taylor by Charnwood Brick.

They are characterized by their non-standard size, 229 x 112 x 69mm with 5mm lime putty joints to replicate the existing brickwork.

The main contractor is Galliford Try.

The Brick Contractor is Irvine Whitlock.

With the West Elevation of St Pancras now completed, this second phase project will reflect the recent refurbishments - the existing hotel built in 1877 and a selection of new apartments.

The West Elevation of St Pancras was Supreme winner in the 2008 Brick Awards run by the Brick Development Association, whilst Irvine Whitlock picked up BDA Craftsmanship Award.
