JELD-WEN has come up with a completely sustainable solution to minimise the amount of waste that goes to landfill and at the same time reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions.

By the end of this year, JELD-WEN will have its own recycling plant, based in Lowestoft, that will receive untreated timber from across the group and produce pellets that will provide fuel for its own heating systems and deliver an environmental fuel supply chain for businesses in the County and further afield The plan involves a major investment in equipment, which will result in JELD-WEN becoming one of the UK's largest recycling plants for timber waste

This complete 360 degree recycling solution is part of a major initiative across the company to reduce its carbon footprint and implement environmentally-friendly waste reduction policies.

Tom Horne, general manager at JELD-WEN Lowestoft, where the plant will be based, explains: "We are really excited about this opportunity to recycle wood waste across our company".

"Being environmentally responsible is really important for us and this takes our policy of only sourcing timber from well managed certified forests one step further".

"We see this as a truly sustainable solution to meeting our environmental and waste disposal requirements as well as ongoing energy needs now and in the future both for us and other businesses".

"This again really does go to show that products manufactured from timber are the truly environmental choice".

JELD-WEN currently produces almost 10,000 tonnes of untreated wood waste per annum from its factories in Lowestoft, Melton Mowbray, Sheffield and Penrith.

Recognising the impact this had on the environment, the company entered into a joint venture with the Briquette and Pellet Company, an organisation which promotes the production of carbon neutral pellets as a sustainable fuel source that results in much lower Carbon Dioxide emissions.

The company's Lowestoft site will soon be recycling all its untreated timber waste from the production of doors, windows and stairs to produce pellets, which when burned are virtually carbon neutral".

"The benefits to the environment will be huge," explains Tom Horne of JELD-WEN.

"We will be producing a more environmentally friendly and cleaner alternative fuel that can be used to heat our offices and factories".

"It's a simple, but perfect solution to the disposal of timber waste".

JELD-WEN is working towards ISO14001 environmental standards and the new pellet manufacturing process is a part of achieving this accreditation.

As part of its commitment to the environment, the company uses only timber that is Chain of Custody certified (either PEFC or FSC).

JELD-WEN's Lowestoft Components factory manufactures timber components for its windows, doors and stairs businesses.

The factory has recently started offering its high quality component manufacturing services to other businesses within the flooring, furniture and beds, doors and windows, timber frame housing as well as to the construction industry generally.
