Specifying timber windows and external joinery products has never been easier, thanks to a new technical guide from Jeld-Wen.

The Technical Guide to Timber Windows and External Joinery contains in-depth information relating to the specification of joinery products to meet the latest Building Regulations requirements and the Code for Sustainable Homes "The Timber Windows Guide is an invaluable tool for anyone involved in the specification or fitting of windows and external doors," explains Tony Pell, Product Manager at Jeld-Wen

"It gives detailed information on specific requirements, relating to acoustic performance and energy efficiency, as well details of glazing types that prevent solar gain and offer low maintenance.

This guide is designed to promote good practice, as well as making it as easy as possible for customers to choose the correct windows to meet their requirements".

As well as all the technical details, the 80 page guide also contains practical information on the correct method of installation for different types of timber window, as well as details of correct care and maintenance to maximise performance on site.

It also gives in-depth sizes and specifications for popular window styles, such as sliding sash and bay windows and vital information on factory finishes, glazing types and energy ratings.

This is the second version of the technical guide that Jeld-Wen has produced, following an unprecedented response to the first one released in 2006.

With the ever tightening Building Regulations, windows and external joinery products are becoming more complicated to specify and the guide is there to show the options available and to guide the builder or architect through the whole process.

Jeld-Wen has recently seen an upsurge in sales of its timber windows and external joinery products.

This is being largely driven by housing associations and developers, who recognise the environmental and aesthetic benefits of timber.

As all Jeld-Wen's softwood timber windows and external joinery products are PEFC Chain of Custody Certified, which means they can be tracked back to the forest to ensure they originate from a well managed sustainable source.

"Choosing sustainable products goes hand in hand with selecting those that are energy efficient," explains Tony Pell: "All our factory glazed timber windows are fitted with Low E glazing units, which enables them to achieve some of the best U-values on the market, as well as helping to meet Part L requirements.

Our aim through this guide is to demonstrate that timber is the natural choice for energy efficiency, low maintenance and enhanced security".
