Sebastian Bawn (19) of Bristol has been named Jewson Trainee of the Year at a national graduation ceremony for 43 young merchants from all over the UK.
Sebastian used his extensive knowledge of building materials to beat four other finalists in a quick fire quiz.
He also received three vocational qualifications: a BTec in Construction Materials, an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship in Customer Service and an Institute of Wood Science Award.
Following a room makeover competition, Stephen Young, Ben Bailey, Jamie Langdale, Emerson Evans, Neil Hall, Dave Sprague and John Gilmore won the trophy for Group of the Year.
The young merchants plumbed in a sink and erected a kitchen unit under timed conditions, showing judges that team work was top of their agenda.
The graduation ceremony, hosted by builders' merchant Jewson and plumbing, heating and sanitaryware specialist, Graham, celebrated the culmination of a two year training programme which equips trainees with the skills and experience they need to progress their careers in a builders' merchant.
Trainee of the Year, Sebastian, worked at Jewson in Bristol from the first day of the course and is now a sales assistant in the branch, taking customer orders and advising on purchasing for large contracts.
"I really enjoyed the practical side of the course," said Sebastian.
"The projects helped me get to grips with the materials and tools that builders need on site, so I could offer better advice to customers at Jewson." Sebastian plans to continue training with the aim of becoming a branch manager in the future.
"The Young Merchant programme provides a hands-on approach to training," said Graham Licence, Training and Development Manager at Jewson.
