Johnson and Starley Reno success story

RENO boilers represent a package of sophisticated, well engineered features that enable it to deliver high efficiency for the maximum proportion of the time it is operating.

A new car model invariably excels in one or two areas compared with its competitors; it never scores more highly in every respect If a mainstream manufacturer suddenly introduced a coupe that was faster than a Ferrari, better looking than a Porsche, handled better than an Aston Martin, had the street cred of a Bentley and the fuel economy of a Ka - not to mention the reliability of a BMW - the world of automobiles would be severely shaken

Jeremy Clarkson could be forced to retire.

Imagine that car manufacturer being British.

The feat would be more than astounding.

Yet that is exactly what UK comfort solutions specialist, Johnson and Starley, did with its Reno range of high-efficiency water boilers.

And now, more than a year after its launch, the market position of the Reno range remains unchanged, ahead in a host of features and unique in its capabilities and low running costs.

RENO boilers are very efficient - complying with SEDBUK Band A - and are fully modulating down to 7kW.

Reno represents a package of sophisticated, well engineered features that enable it to deliver high efficiency for the maximum proportion of the time it is operating.

When in central heating mode, Reno's burners will modulate down from 25 to an industry-leading 7 kW.

Most boilers on the market will only modulate down to 10 or 9 kW at best; Reno is unique in respect of this capability.

It is therefore a real technical achievement and a measure of the expertise existing in the UK to get a boiler to modulate over such a large range and still maintain its efficiency.

It is often said that condensing boilers are efficient in the condensing mode, but for the remainder of their operating time they operate just like a standard efficiency boiler.

However, when the Reno drops out of the condensing mode, it still operates at an efficiency of around 84 per cent which is higher than standard efficiency appliances.

Also, the Reno will keep performing in the condensing mode for more of the time due to the modulation range.

The heat loss for a typical semi-detached house will be in the order of 12 kW when calculated with an outside temperature of -1 degree c.

The problem is that in the UK we only experience these temperatures for four to five weeks in the year; more normally a boiler is working to a much smaller temperature difference between inside and outside.

At 10 degrees c outside temperature, for instance, the calculation with our average semi comes out at a heat loss fractionally below 7 kW - a boiler modulating to 9 kW will drop our of condensing mode at this heat requirement.

Reno is efficient for much more of its operating time than a comparable unit modulating 2 or 3 kW above Reno's bottom range.

The Reno's burner will adjust the output according to demand and therefore reduce in output while maintaining its efficiency.

This makes it more economic to run.

It cycles less than a boiler which will not modulate as low, and the whole set up runs more quietly.

Other industry-leading features include a proven stainless steel heat exchanger at the heart of the system that is guaranteed for five years, as well as a small "foot print" or wall space requirement owing to the compact, space-saving design.

In addition to allowing installation in otherwise unsuitable positions, the long flue capability on RENO boilers also means the best or most suitable exit can be chosen, rather than simply pushing the flue through the nearest wall.

The flue can be taken to 10 metres vertically, horizontal or a combination of both, equivalent in length using 60/100 concentric flue, or 30 metres in a typical twin 80mm flue arrangement.

RENO has an ultra quiet, new-technology flue fan so that, even over long flue lengths, noise levels do not intrude on living spaces.

A unique temperature stabilising system on hot water versions ensures that the constantly-available supply of hot water gives a consistent temperature at the taps.

On-board diagnostics ensure minimum downtime and low maintenance costs.

With such an array of USPs, one might expect the story to end there - but it doesn't.

Far from it, Johnson and Starley offers a range of training solutions to installers and maintains excellent standards of learning and personal development.

What is more, the company has this year won the coveted British Gas STEPS award for boiler manufacturers, proving that it is ahead of the field in this important element of service, too.

Johnson and Starley's manufacturing facilities are unquestionably out of the ordinary.

A tour around the Northampton factory is notable for the absence of oil stains, clutter and oil mist.

The production flows and cleanliness of the operation are instantly visible and there is an inherent quality in everything that goes on - a quality that is translated into the product through good housekeeping, adherence to standards and investment in the right equipment, such as the computerised testing rig that proves the effectiveness of every model going out of the door.

The products would be nothing, of course, without inspirational design and technical know-how.

Johnson and Starley has created a market-leading set of products because it knows about heating.

With many years of innovation behind it, the company has the trust of major organisations and partnerships - such as those with pump manufacturer Grundfoss and control specialist Honeywell - make the finished product one that is perfect for the application.

This means components that are ideally matched and commonality throughout the range, so that installers need carry only the minimum amount of spare parts.

In line with its policy of continuous improvement, Johnson and Starley is staying ahead by constantly bringing new products to market and giving the market what it needs.

Recent illustrations of this are new model extensions for the Reno range and a new training facility for its many training courses. Request a free brochure from Johnson and Starley ...
