John Brash lands cladding on harbour project
Specialist timber importer, John Brash and Company has been chosen to help in redevelopment of the harbour in Looe, Cornwall.
The Brolly Works is a GBP5m project designed around a landscaped courtyard and over three storeys, with surface level parking and a cycle store available to residents.
John Brash developed JB Antislip Plus as an innovative solution for high traffic public walkways that require heavy-duty decking with enhanced grip to minimise the chance of slips and falls.
Being hardwearing and durable, JB Antislip Plus inserts will ensure that this project complies with Health and Safety guidelines, whilst the timber used in the structural decking meets stringent regulations regarding the redevelopment of listed buildings.
BBLB Architects, the chosen designer for the project, chose JB Antislip Plus in order to bring the design and aesthetics in line with the Local Authority's building regulations regarding renovations of listed properties.
The architect from BBLB explains why JB Antislip Plus inserts were used, "We specified JB Antislip Plus because the Brolly works has many communal walkways and meeting areas and it was required to fit in with Health and Safety regulations.
We used it on all the main entrance and egress points, the external corridors and the large internal courtyard.
Another benefit was that the structural timber decking, which the anti-slip inserts were fitted into, did not compromise the integrity of the buildings original design".
The timber decking was used on the main entrance, staircases and balconies that are prevalent around the building and complimented by structured steel hand-rails.
Alan Snape, Mansell Construction's Project Manager for the Brolly Works, said, "I was thoroughly impressed with not just the product, but the service as a whole that was offered by John Brash.
Timber decking was chosen to maintain the integrity of the Grade II listed building's design and the anti-slip inserts on the product ensured that it also meets the latest safety requirements".
Nigel Booth, Marketing Manager at John Brash, explains: "We are delighted that everyone involved in the Brolly Works project is happy with JB Antislip Plus.
The architects required a product that was aesthetically sympathetic with the existing structure and their original design concept, but also ensured that residential safety guidelines were adhered to".
The JB Antislip Plus is created using a unique formula of raised resin-based aggregate inserts which are injected into either Decksure Premier, Decksure, Thermowood or Western Red Cedar structural deck boards.
In the majority of cases, two JB Antislip Plus inserts are appropriate, however there are instances where three inserts are recommended - such as public walkways which run alongside or cross water.
The standard inserts are a medium grey colour.
In addition to this, the company recently launched a new range of solid colour inserts which help draw attention to certain areas of the deck for both aesthetic, practical as well as health and safety reasons.
For instance, coloured JB Antislip Plus inserts are proving particularly effective where there are changes in heights, or steps on a deck.
All John Brash structural timber decking is vacuum preservative treated and is unique in carrying a 25 year guarantee against wood rotting fungi and insect attack.
In addition, a water repellent wax additive is applied during the preservation process which further improves the stability of the timber, making it less susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity.
JB Antislip Plus has been independently tested by the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) using a Stanley Pendulum (the operation and calibration of which is described in BS7976:2002) in accordance with the current issue of the United Kingdom Slip Resistance Group (UKSRG) guidelines (Issue 3, 2005).
JB Antislip Plus significantly exceeds the minimum requirement for 'low potential for slip' in both wet and dry conditions. Request a free brochure from John Brash & Co ...
