John Brash has supplied its western red cedar shingles to the Welsh Primary School in Swansea, which has achieved a BREEAM schools 'very good' assessment.

Western red cedar shingles with FRT exterior fire retardant treatment (AA Rating) provided the school with feature cladding to the curved external walls, in order to create what the architect describes as a 'cedar shell'.

The shingles were fitted by Camilleri and Sons.

The school is a new build project designed by Stride Treglown Davies.

The BREEAM Schools 'very good' rating was achieved by the building meeting a selection of credit-based environmental performance criteria.

BREEAM is the Environmental Assessment Method developed by the BRE (Building Research Establishment), which assesses the environmental performance and sustainability of buildings.

All primary school projects over GBP500,000 and secondary schools over GBP2m have to achieve a BREEAM Schools 'very good' assessment.

The BRE Green Guide recently awarded western red cedar an 'A' rating for sustainability because of its insulation properties, low embodied energy and natural renewability.

Western red cedar shingles are versatile, which allows them to be used for vertical cladding to roofs with pitches as low as 14 degrees.

The natural preservative in cedar also ensures it is a durable timber, which gives it an effective life of up to 60 years.

John Brash treats its shingles with a copper-based preservative treatment, in compliance with BS8417, allowing it to offer a 40-year guarantee against wood-rotting fungi and insect attack.
