The roof complements the circular shape of Pennine's Rural Craft Centre.

John Brash Western Red Cedar shingles were chosen for the project as their lightweight nature would allow the designers to create the complex geometries needed on the conical shaped circular roof .

The shingles can be used on roof pitches as low as 14, through to vertical cladding.

Pennine Camphill Community wanted to create a building with a low carbon footprint to reduce the impact on the environment.

As timber is a naturally renewable material and growing trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the use of Western Red Cedar shingles was specified.

The conical shape of the roof meant that the John Brash Western Red Cedar shingles were fitted directly onto the membrane instead of using battens.

Western Red Cedar shingles are recognised for their appearance, strength-to-weight ratio and natural durability.

They possess good thermal qualities, achieving a K-value of 0.167W/mC.

John Brash Western Red Cedar shingles are available with FRT Exterior fire retardant treatment to Class 0 rating.

An additional advantage of this process is that it inhibits insect attack and the growth of wood rotting fungi, which helps to prolong their lifespan to a minimum of 40 years.

All John Brash's timber products are certified under both FSC and PEFC schemes, ensuring that timber is sourced from only sustainable forests with long term management procedures in place.
