Leay wins environmental credentials

Leay, an approved installer of Kawneer architectural aluminium systems, has won ISO 14001, the international standard for Environmental Management Systems.

ISO 14001 monitors a company's environmental impact in areas such as waste disposal, air emission and use of water and power Kawneer won it three years ago

Now Leay, which is Kawneer's longest-established dealer, having fabricated and installed Kawneer's curtain walling, windows and doors for 40 years, has put in place systems to ensure compliance with ISO 14001 at all levels.

Leay already has the Quality Management System accreditation ISO 9001 and Investors In People status.

The ISO 14001 accreditation is a reflection of the environmental responsibility shared by Leay's 36 employees.

Jim Hodges, a director of the company, explained: "The procedure to achieve ISO 14001 was not particularly arduous as we did not have to make too many changes to our normal working procedures".

The most expensive change the company had to make to comply with ISO 14001 was replacing two trucks to limit emissions, reduce fuel usage and change to Euro 4 diesel to meet new legislation requirements from July 2008.

Leay staff in Maidstone are tasked with being diligent when it comes to energy monitoring and a "switch-off" policy is in place in the offices.

In addition, as many products as possible are recycled.

"Aluminium is a very valuable commodity and 100% recyclable, and our waste glass, paper and cardboard are also recycled," said Mr Hodges. Request a free brochure from Kawneer UK ...
