Kawneer products are futuristic at Salford Quays
Curtain walling, windows and doors by architectural aluminium systems supplier Kawneer have helped to bring a futuristic appearance to Salford Quays.
Planners were supportive throughout to Reiach and Hall's contemporary design although the site, which had been used for car parking, is within the West End Conservation Area and alongside a listed Victorian terrace.
The new extension provides new entrance and circulation facilities together with research laboratories and associated accommodation next to and adjoining the existing computing science department.
It is a close neighbour to Reiach and Hall's award-winning Wolfson Medical School Building, also designed for the university's estates and buildings office.
Built of a steel frame with composite concrete floor slabs and blockwork infill, construction on the cramped site was by Henry Brothers Scotland.
The Kawneer PF system forms the main curtain wall to the teaching spaces and was installed in a pale umber finish by Kawneer approved installer Charles Henshaw and Sons.
The result, according to Reiach and Hall, is "Now an iconic design which expresses both its architectural place in the city and a state-of-the-art education research environment".
Reiach and Hall also added: "We felt a structurally glazed curtain wall system was appropriate for the project and would provide the flush appearance we were after.

"The curtain wall is a major element of the main elevation and the Kawneer PF system provides the sheer, capless aesthetic we were looking for and visually complements the crisp limestone cladding.".
