The medieval market town of Mildenhall has been brought up to date with the creation of a new modern bus interchange, equipped with some 582 square metres of Falzinc.

Designed by architects The Johns Practice, the striking hexagonal roof of the £360,000 facility has been inspired by the town's famous Market Cross, which dates back to the 1400's.

Installed by Metalex Roofing for main contractor Godfrey and Hicks Builders Limited, the flexibility of Falzinc, combined with its distinct, mature appearance, made it the ideal material to achieve the complex roof design, whilst ensuring the building remained sympathetic to the town's historic heritage.

Lightweight yet extremely durable, Falzinc also provided a low maintenance solution that would allow the design team to replicate lead, the material in which the roof of the Market Cross is constructed, in both appearance and performance.

For consistency and to further enhance the appearance of the roof, Falzinc was also specified for both the fascias and soffits and, as an additional feature, was used in the internal cladding of the station and complements the unusual 'raspberry pink' colour scheme.

Located on the site of an old car park, the new bus station marks an important stage in the ongoing regeneration of Mildenhall and will provide improved travel facilities for the local community, which includes a large number of American service personnel stationed at the nearby US Air Force bases.

Falzinc combines a pre-weathered zinc layer with an aluminium core to provide long-term protection against corrosion and excellent durability.

A recyclable material with high residual values, Falzinc is both lightweight and workable, irrespective of temperature.
