The new Faculty of Health and Social Care building at Salford University has become a landmark not least because of its unusually coloured Kalzip aluminium roof.

The new Faculty of Health and Social Care building at Salford University has become a landmark feature in the Greater Manchester skyline, not least because of its unusually coloured Kalzip aluminium roof.

Over 3,250 square metres of Kalzip 65/400 sheets were specified for the challenging roof design, with AFL Architects of Manchester opting for a PVdF colour coated profile sheet in light green (RAL 6027), to create a truly distinctive and individual appearance.

As well as the aesthetic appeal, this high-performance finish will also help protect the roof from weathering and UV damage for over 20 years.

Installed by approved Teamkal members Richmond Cladding for main contactor HBG Construction, the striking 'sloping' Kalzip roof pitches from five storeys at the main entrance to two storeys diagonally opposite.

The structured square shaped building is further complemented by the contrasting geometry of the circular 'hole' at the roof's centre, which has also allowed for the creation of an attractive courtyard area for staff and students.

A range of Kalzip fabrications was also specified on this project.

The new faculty building, which is part of the University's ongoing campus redevelopment programme, will house students of nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, radiotherapy, social work and complimentary medicine.

Benefiting from a prime location on a main access route into Manchester, the innovative and modern design of the building aims to reflect Salford University's standing as one of the UK's largest providers of nursing education.
