Kalzip aluminium standing seam roof at airport
New terminal building at Farnborough Airport has been equipped with a strikingly modern Kalzip aluminium standing seam roof.
The third stage of Reid Architecture's redevelopment of Farnborough Airport is now complete and like the innovative hanger and air traffic control tower before it, the new terminal building has also been equipped with a strikingly modern Kalzip aluminium standing seam roof.
Installed by approved Teamkal contractor Lakesmere, over 1,800 square metres of Kalzip 65/400 aluminium form the dramatic asymmetrical 'wing-like' roof of the terminal building.
Owing to the nature of the facility and its location at one of the country's busiest regional business airports, the roof itself was required to be as equally impressive as the elevations that can be viewed from ground level.
Using Kalzip's tapering capabilities, the graceful curves of the radial rooflights and monopitch roof were accentuated to provide a stunning visual appearance.
The flexibility of Kalzip was not the only quality that made it the ideal choice of building material and its use on all three of the new buildings at the airport is not simply a result of the architect's desire to create a sense of unity and harmony between the contrasting designs of the terminal, hanger and control tower.
In addition to Kalzip's attractive modern appearance, its outstanding durability and weathering properties were vital to ensuring that the finish and aesthetic appeal of the roof structures will not diminish and that the new additions to Farnborough Airport remain iconic landmarks for years to come.
Michael Dempsey, Associate Director of Reid Architecture adds: "The combination of Kalzip's good reputation and strong technical support, along with the added benefits of working with a quality supply chain of approved installers such as Lakesmere, have always been seen as unique and important reasons for specifying the material and as a key feature on all three of the new buildings at Farnborough Airport, it doesn't disappoint".
Not only a significant milestone in modern aviation design, the three storey 4,000 square metre facility also has a practical function and will serve as the new state of the art operational and administrative centre for the airport whilst also to providing meeting and conference facilities for business travellers.
