Architect finds 'best standing seam
available'
When architects Hazle McCormack Young LLP wanted the "best standing seam available" for a project that meant Kalzip.
When social housing provider mhs homes wanted a new, "highly energy efficient" headquarters to bring all of its six sites under one roof, architects Hazle McCormack Young LLP wanted the "best standing seam available" for it ...and that meant Kalzip They also wanted the best technical support available to help them deliver the challenging design of the monopitch shell roof which arcs over to become an external wall which itself features a series of varying radii and window modules the same width as the Kalzip sheets

Kalzip clad new air traffic control tower
Kalzip's aluminium standing seam system has been used to clad Newcastle International Airport's new GBP8.2 million air traffic control tower.
James Galpin of Hazle McCormack Young LLP, who won a limited competition to design the building, said: "We wanted the best standing seam available and the best technical support to assist us in delivering the challenging design of the shell roof.
"The building uses less than a quarter of the energy of a similar sized air conditioned building and has become a new identity for the mhs homes group.
Kalzip's performance is great - very good U-values - and the aesthetics have been achieved but not without the efforts we expected".

New brochure right choice of roofing material
New Kalzip brochure is updated with even more technical information in response to architects' and specifiers' requirements, it is the standing seam compendium of choice.
"Broadside" brings mhs homes' sites around Chatham and Rochester in Kent under one, five storey roof on Leviathan Way, Chatham Maritime - within the grounds of the historic dockyard - with a total of more than 4,000 m of lettable office space.
The steel frame building with brick cavity walls, insulated cladding, special concrete slabs (for comfort cooling without using air conditioning), aluminium and timber composite windows and the aluminium standing seam roof and facade was erected by Wallis (a division of Kier Regional) on a plot originally used for forming the sections of the Medway Tunnel.
This was then remediated for development as part of the SEEDA masterplan for the Chatham Maritime site.
Located between the Victorian pump house and historic covered slips to the south of the site, the GBP6.9 million building has three main facades - the curved Kalzip roof to reflect the profile of the covered slips, sawtooth river front glazing to give the office areas unrestricted views of the river and Upnor Castle without causing areas of direct insolation, and a four storey brick screen wall which embraces the grand elliptical piazza of the SEEDA masterplan.
"The Kalzip roof forms one of three critical elements of the design and is deliberately articulated from the other facade materials by virtue of its profile and shape," said Mr Galpin.
The building's design minimises its impact on the environment and uses energy in a responsible manner.
Night time air is circulated through the structure of the building to provide heating and cooling without mechanical air conditioning and its thermal performance is in excess of current building regulations.
Hazle McCormack Young LLP have more than met the brief to not only create a highly energy efficient flagship office building but to spend costs responsibly and demonstrate the added value of investing in an environmentally conscious building.
Even before work started, the practice had its work cut out, with a host of design considerations to meet, including CABE approval prior to planning, SEEDA approval, Environment Agency restrictions and loading restrictions on the piling due to the Medway Tunnel underneath the site.
However, after the CABE review, planning approval was dealt with at officer level and the design justified - if it ever needed it - by winning the 2007 RICS Award for Sustainability.
Kalzip approved Teamkal member TR Freeman installed the stucco embossed 65/500 1.0 mm, smooth curved standing seam on structural decking with liner, insulation and a clear VCL.
The company's Gary Webb said: "Although the roof was simple to install, the vertical face was a little more difficult as the sheets were approximately 17 metres long and had a series of varying radii.
We were given assistance from Kalzip's project co-ordinator Ralph Ellis and although slow to install, due to access and scaffolding impeding our works, the installation went very well.
"A design challenge that had to be overcome was the window setting out.
However, again with the assistance of the Kalzip supervisors, we overcame the problem and the project looks extremely attractive.
Considering the installation took place in the winter, with high winds coming off the estuary, the finished work hides the difficulties encountered during the installation".
Wallis project manager Robert John added: "It was identified early on that to achieve the architect's design, interface meetings between TR Freeman, Wallis, Hazle McCormack Young LLP and structural engineers Price and Myers were essential.
"These meetings enabled TR Freeman to procure the correct curved sheets from Kalzip and produce working drawings for the fitters on site. Request a free brochure from Kalzip ...
Although the installation was not without its difficulties, these were overcome by the working together of all parties, including the manufacturer Kalzip, to achieve what has been a very aesthetically pleasing and innovative facade.".
