SandP Architects specified over 5,000m of Kalzip stucco embossed aluminium standing seam roofing for the swimming pool complex at Cardiff Bay's International Sports Village.

Teamkal contractor, Central Roofing South Wales installed all the roofing sheets together with Kalzip perforated liners and fabricated gutters for the project's main contractor, Laing O'Rourke.

Robert Guy, SandP managing director said, "When it came to the building's roofing, we chose Kalzip for a number of reasons - its light weight, aesthetics, quality and performance in an environment that is aggressive both inside and out".

"The section of the building is simple and creates a huge single plane roof area, so appearance was important because the building is visible from as far away as Penarth".

"Kalzip was always the preferred solution - we've used it before, know its capabilities and as well as looking good, it gives the required thermal and acoustic performance".

The brief to SandP from client Orion Land and Leisure (Cardiff), working with Cardiff Council was for a full-size Olympic pool, seating for 900 spectators and a fun pool complemented by elements that would make the building economic to operate.

Energy use was clearly an issue as was conforming to the Part L regulations.

SandP also incorporated a fitness suite including dance / activity studios, a health suite, cafe bar, creche and children's party facilities.

The new pool is the first building of the International Sports Village and replaces Cardiff's old Empire pool which was demolished to make way for the Millennium Stadium.

Its massive, mono-pitched roof rises from 7 to 18 metres over a flume tower that is itself the centrepiece of a science-themed water park that complements the 50-metre, 10-lane competition pool and 25-metre, 4-lane warm up pool.
