Caledonian Building Systems has won a GBP42 million contract to construct eight new accommodation blocks for the Royal School of Military Engineering (RSME) on three different training sites.

Modular construction specialist Caledonian is working with Carillion to construct the buildings, with the first building due on site in June 2009.

The modular approach allows a considerably shorter project time-frame, a high quality of construction, and greater certainty of project costs.

Another benefit is that the buildings will be built to BREEAM good standard (2010), helping to meet sustainability targets.

Modules are manufactured in Caledonian's off-site factory at Newark, then transported for installation and finishing on the RSME sites at Medway, Minley and Bicester.

The new buildings will house 913 men and women of both senior and junior rank in private en-suite bedrooms.

Training with the RSME by nature involves a great deal of outdoor activity, so the buildings also include facilities such as male and female changing rooms, baggage stores, utility/laundry rooms and drying rooms.

Construction will start on site in June 2009 and project completion is expected in 2013.

Caledonian and Carillion have previously worked together on a number of five floor accommodation blocks as part of the redevelopment of NATO Headquarters at Northwood, Stephen Perkins, Project Director at Carillion, comments: "Carillion and Caledonian are once again working together to provide the Armed Forces with the high standards of Single Living Accommodation our service personnel deserve".

Ian Kemp, Business Development Director at Caledonian Building Systems comments: "This project will demonstrate the capabilities of modular construction, and the benefits it can offer.

We have considerable experience in the defence sector, largely through our work on Project SLAM and Flagship for the Royal Navy, where we have recently been delivering circa 1500 beds a year, and we were able to assist in the design development and value engineering of The project is part of a GBP3 billion scheme to provide new refurbished accommodation and develop more efficient use of the training estate, reduce running costs, and improve facilities.
