New style library building wins design competition

A KEM Edwards product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jan 23, 2008

Competition held by Kem Edwards and judges included representatives from Draper and SPIE Matthew Hall.

When primary children in Sunbury-on-Thames were asked to design a community building of the future their ideas ranged from luminous fire stations, to mobile hospitals on wheels.

The competition was held by Kem Edwards ., who provide construction supplies nationwide, and the judges included representatives from tool specialists Draper and one of the main contractors from Heathrow's Terminal 5, SPIE Matthew Hall.

From over 100 entries the judges selected Cathy from Chennestone School as the overall winner with her idea for a library that also included a bicycle shed, a book corner for babies and an outside garden.

All the children taking part received high-visibility jackets from Kem Edwards to make walking to and from school safer and the winner and runners-up also got mini-building kits.

The prizes were awarded by the Mayor of Spelthorne, Councillor Andrew Hirst, at the Council Chambers, to Cathy for her overall winning entry and also to her fellow pupils at Chennestone School; Ben, Selina and Olivia.

The winning entry at Kenyngton Manor School was Brooke for her school design and Dean for his restaurant.

Speaking about the competition, Mayor, Andrew Hirst, said; "Kem Edwards have recognised that it is good to get youngsters thinking about what buildings we may need in the future and also how people might travel there.

"It is also reassuring to see that children still value the importance of buildings such as libraries, swimming pools and schools, but have been able to look at them in a new and innovative way," he added.

The winning entries will be on display at the Council Offices and also on Kem Edwards' website.
