Kier Scotland, part of Kier Regional, starts the New Year with a new man at the helm Based out of the company's Stepps office, Derek Fothergill (57) was appointed managing director, beginning on 8 January 2007

Speaking on his first day Derek talked enthusiastically about the future: "Kier Scotland has a good reputation and its workload has been stable for some considerable length of time".

"In the medium and long-term we'd like to see significant growth and increase our presence in the marketplace".

"Certainly the capability is there - the company has extremely knowledgeable and professional staff, and we'll be supplementing their skills over the coming year with further appointments".

Derek's own appointment comes after six years spent as managing director of Robertson Construction Central, prior to which he developed his career in the industry with Morrison and Border Construction.

He started out on a joinery apprenticeship with John Laing straight out of school, and spent 18 years with the firm - he is rightly proud of his experience at all levels of the construction business.

Derek moved to Scotland some 25 years ago, and is now settled in Dunblane with his wife, and although his children have all graduated and left home, is very much a family man.

Sporting interests are supplemented by a love of walking in the countryside.

It's a countryside he knows well now, with a wealth of experience and knowledge of Scotland's central belt.

Kier Regional managing director Dick Side commented: "We are very pleased that Derek has chosen to join Kier to lead our construction business in Scotland and enable us to realise the full potential of our investment north of the border".

Derek himself added: "I don't see any barriers ahead - we've good people, a good strategy, and I'm looking forward to being part of Kier Scotland's successful future.".
