Main contractor Brammall Construction worked alongside cladding contractor Brooks Construction between April and December 2004.
Brooks supplied and fixed the Roof Tile system along with ridge and verge flashings, fascias and soffits.
Barry Brooks, managing director of Brooks Construction, explains: "One of the problems was that the houses were occupied, and extreme care needed to be taken during delivery of the materials".
"Because the Roof Tile system could be installed quickly, it helped keep disruption to the residents to a minimum." The quick lay of the Roof Tile system was therefore crucial as it ensured that disruption to residents was minimal.
Work was also conducted in accordance with energy conservation measures.
A similar housing association scheme also took place in Papendrecht, Holland, where 120 houses were refurbished with Kingzip on the roofs.
The Roof Tile system is lightweight, contains a FIREsafe insulation core, and satisfies stringent planning processes.
Its single fix means that it can be installed directly onto steel or timber purlins, eliminating the need for battens, roof felt, and a separate layer of insulation, so construction time is therefore shortened.
The impressive lifetime durability of the Roof Tile system, which is up to 25 years to first maintenance and 40 years overall, ensures that it is an effective solution for aging, single skin properties.
The BISF was formed in 1934 and sponsored a solution for permanent steel framed housing to a design by architect Sir Frederick Gibberd.
The Burt Committee approved the design in 1944 and 36,000 BISF houses were subsequently built over a six-year period.
