Not only are even tighter standards being demanded, but instead of a simple elemental method to demonstrate compliance, a whole building carbon output methodology has to be used.
Because the calculation of a whole building carbon output is so complex, a national suite of software must be used.
For non-domestic buildings either the SBEM (Simplified Building Energy Model), or alternative government approved software takes the role of proving compliance with ADL2A, and it is this section of the industry that is particularly struggling with the new regime.
Compliance is achieved if the design achieves the target carbon dioxide emission rate (TER) compared to a notional building based on the 2002 regulations.
This requires the input of a large number of parameters, including the thermal characteristics of the building envelope, airtightness, lighting, building services occupancy and use.
The problem is that for some types of construction the software has not been without its gremlins and results to date have been unreliable.
In order to alleviate the problems experienced by SBEM users, high performance composite panel manufacturers Kingspan Insulated Panels has commissioned some dedicated software, based on an existing, widely recognised package.
The IES "Virtual Environment" software, Version 5.5 has been approved by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) for use in calculating the energy performance of buildings for the purposes of ADL2A.
Available free to all Kingspan customers, a compliance service using the IES software is available through Envirocare Technical Services based at Holywell, and has already seen a number of projects successfully underway.
Andy Patel, Divisional Technical Manager for Kingspan Insulated Panels said "Specifiers were wary of the results gained using SBEM.
With the proven track record of IES and the technical expertise we can offer through Envirocare Technical Services they can feel confident that the best compliance solutions are found for their designs.".
