An innovative mechanical handling system for installing roof panelling, has revolutionised the roofing of the GBP1.3m Walkers snack-food packaging facility in Skelmersdale, Lancashire, cutting installation time by an estimated 40%.

The self-powered turning unit, the Rota Boy , was developed by Kingspan Insulated Panels, with joint venture partner 4 Cladding Services, especially for use with its insulated roof panels.

The unit makes it possible to install an incredible 1,000m2 to 2,000m2 of insulated panels per day.

The Walkers plant required 1,100m2 of Kingspan's trapezoidal panel in 17 metre lengths which was specified and installed by specialist cladding contractors Brooks Construction Services .

The consistency of insulation values for the Kingspan panels was an important factor in choosing Kingspan for the contract.

Brooks Construction Services were also instrumental in utilising the Rota Boy system which allowed the panels to be rotated from delivered bundles through 180 degrees and then moved directly into position on the roof, without having to be handled manually, thus considerably speeding up the fitting time.

An estimated time saving of 40% was made by using the Rota Boy .

Richard Hall, Contracts Manager for Harry Peers Construction the principal contractors on the project said: "The Kingspan roof panel proved to be an innovative solution and provides the correct environment for the proposed use of the building".

"The roof panels were quick to install and will reduce potential for future maintenance issues".

"The panels are highly adaptable and can be economically installed".

"Both the client and Harry Peers Construction are very pleased with the product and service".

Since the advent of long-spanning structural panels, the question of handling these large items without risk of injury, or damage to the panel itself, has been a challenge to the installer.

In pursuit of a solution to this challenge, Kingspan Insulated Panels has been developing relationships across the mechanical handling industry, exploring new techniques to improve on-site installation, for the benefit of its customers.

The company supports contractors with product installation training, technical expertise and produces site installation guides and handy fold-out installation sheets with step by step information.

A DVD on the subject of mechanical handling, filmed during the Walkers Food plant construction, is now in production and will be available to contractors soon.

Steve Ball, Kingspan's field services manager said: "We've seen considerable changes for the construction industry recently and this pace of change is set to continue for the foreseeable future".

"For the industry to continue to thrive, it has to evolve new techniques to improve efficiencies".

"Kingspan is pleased to be leading the way in this field.".
