Kingspan Off-Site helps 'flagship' Eco-School

A Kingspan Off-Site product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jul 7, 2008

Kingspan Off-Site's Architectural Facade System has helped an eco-friendly primary school in Belper, Derbyshire achieve 'flagship' status for sustainable building.

The Kingspan Metro AFS through-wall system was specified for the Herbert Strutt Primary School to meet the requirements of the distinctive 'S' shaped building design and challenging setting.

The innovative, single storey school was designed to complement the existing landscape and as such the building is set on an existing sloped surface.

Off-site construction provided an ideal solution for this setting which required a system to work with the topography of the site.

The non-load bearing steel framing supplied by Kingspan Off-Site, was factory engineered to the precise dimensions required by this setting.

Manufactured at Kingspan Off-Site's facility at Sherburn, North Yorkshire, the Kingspan Metro AFS panels are delivered to site ready for immediate installation, minimising the need for on-site product storage.

Approved installers, WHL installed the panels at Herbert Strutt School which eliminated the need for waste disposal and fixed scaffolding at the site.

The Kingspan Metro AFS system is compatible with a number of external wall finishes, including brick, render, cladding and rainscreen.

Herbert Strutt School was finished in a combination of acrylic render and Trespa rainscreen, which were fixed directly onto the steel wall panels.

Bill Wilson, managing director at WHL, commented: "Kingspan Off Site's Architectural Facade System was ideal for the Herbert Strutt School".

"Each panel was precisely tailored and manufactured to meet the unusual 'S' shaped design of the building and the landscape, in accordance with the architectural design.".
