New European standard is the focus of the latest technical bulletin from leading sewage solutions provider Klargester.
A new European standard, which will make it easier for builders to determine the quality of small wastewater treatment systems, is the focus of the latest technical bulletin from leading sewage solutions provider Klargester The Klargester bulletin, which is available free of charge to builders, highlights the standard, prEN12566 - Part 3: Small Wastewater Treatment Systems for up to 50 PT Package and/or Site Assembled Domestic Wastewater Treatment plants

Kingspan Pollution Control new maintenance service
Kingspan Pollution Control has launched a new maintenance division called TEKSERV, which will cover sewage treatment plants, pumping stations and rainwater recycling equipment.
This standard outlines the minimum product requirements for small sewage treatment plants serving up to 50 people.
These include the fact that the equipment must be watertight and corrosion resistant, and fitted with an alarm to indicate operational failure.
They must also be designed to allow easy access for routine maintenance, sampling and sludge removal.

An efficiency and performance testing procedure has been established, and manufacturers wanting to meet the standards must have their products measured against a list of key requirements, including daily hydraulic flow and load, power consumption and temperature The performance tests will take place during a 38-week period and some manufacturers have already put their systems forward for this process.
The tests will be mostly conducted under "normal" usage conditions, which are defined as intermittent flows during a 24- hour period.
However, the performance of the product in the event of a problem, such as a power failure, under loading, or overloading, will also be assessed.
After the 38-week test period, a set of treatment efficiency ratios will be produced for each product.
These will be stated on the CE marking label, making it easier for builders to determine the difference between brands and models, and to choose the best product for their customers' needs.
The prEN12566 standard is one of a series of new standards, which are being finalised.
The series defines performance levels for all kinds of sewage treatment products, including prefabricated and in-situ constructed septic tanks and irrigation systems.
Alison Anderson, who is Process Manager for Klargester and has been at the forefront of the development of the standards with other experts from across Europe, said: "The quality and effectiveness of small wastewater systems has always been contentious, with no comprehensive system in place.
Consequently, manufacturers have had the cost and inconvenience of re-testing products to ensure they satisfied different countries' requirements.
"By testing products to the same rigorous standards, we will bring real conformity to the industry, making it easier for builders to judge the quality and effectiveness of individual products for themselves.
This will increase consumer confidence and understanding, and help to ensure a safer environment for everyone".
Klargester produces free technical bulletins for the industry twice a year.
