Knauf AMF ceilings able to provide necessary fire standards in a specialist clean room for new DVD manufacturing plant.

Main contractors Diversico Services recently undertook the relocation, design and build of a new DVD manufacturing plant within the former Renault Distribution Centre in Swindon, specifying over 5000m2 of Knauf AMF Ceilings.

Originally designed by Sir Norman Foster, the Spectrum Building as it is now known, won numerous awards when it opened in 1983.

The interior also featured in some of the action sequences in the James Bond film 'A View to a Kill' starring Roger Moore.

Commenting on the recent redevelopment, Chris Murphy, Project Manager for Diversico Services said: "We specified Knauf AMF ceilings as our fitters find them very easy to cut, making them quicker and easier to work with".

"They also needed to meet the relevant fire regulations, which was a particular issue for the clean room".

"AMF is one of the few companies to offer the necessary fire standards in a specialist clean room product".

The new factory features a variety of internal spaces including offices, packing and distribution, manufacturing and clean rooms, so it required a number of different ceiling solutions.

Knauf AMF's Fresko ceiling tiles were chosen for most areas as the finely textured surface and micro-perforations provide an elegant ceiling with good sound absorption.

Fresko tiles are available in 15mm and 19mm thicknesses and a variety of dimensions.

They can be used in exposed, demountable grids; free span systems with exposed or concealed suspension and are also suitable for bandraster systems with concealed cross sections, making them a versatile option for a range of applications.

For the clean rooms, it was essential to find a ceiling tile that could control airborne particle emissions to reduce the risk of contamination of the air.

EN ISO 14644 classifies clean room technologies in classes 1-9 with 1 being the highest specification for particle emissions.

Knauf AMF's Thermatex Plain (Schlicht) ceiling tiles were specified as they are rated ISO 4 on this scale and are particularly suited to CD/DVD manufacturing.

Their excellent fire rating is another important feature, offering up to 60 minutes fire protection.

Thermatex Plain is available in 15mm thickness and can be used with an exposed, demountable grid system.
