Guide to working towards carbon zero schools

A Knauf AMF product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Aug 15, 2008

Knauf Insulation has launched Working Towards Zero Carbon Schools, an Education Sector Guide on all aspects of insulation specification.

The guide includes comprehensive information on the thermal, fire and acoustic performance of glass and rock mineral wool and foamed plastic products.

As the only UK manufacturer of all types of insulation, Knauf is able to offer specifiers and contractors impartial advice, based on current and future regulations.

The requirements of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), Building Regulations Approved Document Part L and Building Bulletins 93 and 100 are all detailed in the guide, which covers insulation for roofs, external walls and floors.

In addition to technical information on the thermal performance of the different insulation products, the acoustic and fire performance requirements for insulation within an education build programme are also explored.

Due to their very nature, education buildings must effectively meet the acoustic requirements of sound insulation and sound absorption and the guide includes advice on achieving the required standards.

Limiting the spread of fire is, of course, another crucial factor when specifying building products for schools, and therefore clarification on the importance of non combustible components is also provided.

Tony Corcoran, non-residential market manager at Knauf Insulation, comments, "The Building Schools for the Future initiative has meant that an increasing amount of design and construction work is being undertaken in this sector, which is why a bespoke guide such as this will be so valuable.

"We're confident that with the Education Sector Guide, specifiers and contractors will be able to specify the most appropriate insulation solution and maximise the thermal performance of a final build, extension or refurbishment of an education building".

Knauf Insulation also runs CPD seminars and training programmes on the correct specification of insulation and operates a Technical Advisory Centre.

In addition, an online calculation suite, at www.knaufinsulation.co.uk hosts a unique U-value calculator.
