Kurawood PLC, the manufacturer of VECOwood organically modified softwood, is expanding its production facilities in New Zealand.

The expansion will mean that production will increase from 30,000 cubic metres to 300,000 cubic metres a year Work to expand the factory in Tauranga on New Zealand's North Island is being fast tracked to complete by the end of June 2008, enabling the company to meet the needs of a growing order book

"This is an important step for the company" says Kevin Fraser, Kurawood's sales and marketing director.

"We are talking to a wide range of customers and are investing in factory expansion as a response to the levels of interest we have received".

"It will mean that we can respond promptly to our customers' needs." The company's increased production capacity should be felt on the markets in August 2008.

Kurawood's innovative product is softwood, pressure injected with an organic water soluble solution.

The solution links with the wood's molecules and polymerises within the wood, creating a hard, durable wood once it has dried.

The modification process is designed to change the characteristics of the timber to mimic those of tropical hardwood.

Kurawood sources its wood from New Zealand's native fast growing FSC certified plantation pine forests.

Fraser says "New Zealand Radiata pine grows very quickly and because of the climate the trees grow very tall and wide so we are able to sustainably source far more wood far more quickly than other manufacturers.".
