The new Ster Century cinema at Festival Place, Basingstoke provides a stunning example of the versatility of modern drywall materials.

Systems from Lafarge Plasterboard have been used to create a dramatic entrance foyer, featuring eye-catching curved and barrelled features along with cut-outs to house recessed lighting The foyer makes use of three different boards to match the demanding specifications of different parts of the space

Barrelled drop bulkheads, creating a canopy over retail areas, are constructed using a suspended metal furring system in conjunction with twin layers of Lafarge 6mm Contour board.

Other curves within the dramatic ceiling design are formed from pre-wetted Firecheck board.

This product combines high levels of fire performance with curve strength derived from the incorporation of glassfibre within the core.

The specification for vertical linings centres on Lafarge Toughcheck boards which offer the additional impact resistance required for circulation areas.

The drama of the entrance foyer is complemented by the use of Lafarge's high performance acoustic partitions within the auditoria.

Designed with twin 90mm metal studs, linked using the Lafarge acoustic Z brace, these incorporate insulation within the cavity and are faced with Lafarge Plank and two layers of 15mm dBcheck board on either side.

The Developers, Grosvenor Developments, are leasing the building to Ster Century.

Main contractors for the Basingstoke cinema project were Laing Construction.

The drywall installation was undertaken by Hillcrest for specialist internal fit out contracters McCloughlin and Harvey.
