NFRC award for Lakesmere Newcastle project

A Lakesmere product story

Lakesmere has won at the 2009 National Federation Of Roofing Contractors Awards for its impressive facade work on Newcastle International Airport's new air traffic control tower.

After beating off strong competition from three other finalists, Lakesmere was named as the winner of the Vertical Cladding category at a special awards ceremony on May 15th.

The striking project, which also received a commendation at the 2008 Kalzip Teamkal Awards, boasts an unusual cladding design that Lakesmere successfully created by installing several cascading tiers of tapered Kalzip aluminium sheets.

Using the latest 3D CAD design technology to carefully produce each of the bespoke sheets, Lakesmere also drew on its expertise in off-site construction techniques to complete the installation process at the top of the 45 metre high tower.

Located close to an active airfield, the project also presented various logistical challenges including the requirement for specific air-side health and safety training to be completed, together with a strict construction programme and deadlines to be met.
