Tube Lines also operates some of the world's busiest railway stations including Waterloo (32.6 million passengers per year), Leicester Square (28.1 million passengers per year) and Tottenham Court Road (28 million passengers per year).
Designed to integrate with the opening of Tube Lines new Head Office in West Ferry Circus, London, the company decided to improve and upgrade its security systems and move business from its existing cashless provider to Counter Solutions because of their experience in similar markets.
Integrated security system specialists First City Care replaced 148 Proximity Readers with LEGIC contactless smart card readers and provided a multi-user Geoffrey Access Control System with fully integrated CCTV coverage.
The company also proposed and explained the benefits of contactless LEGIC contactless smart card technology, which now allows for secure ID access control, cashless vending and other possible future uses.
Working to very short timescales, both First City Care and Counter Solutions, who specialise in supplying the hospitality industry with the latest electronic point of sale technology, began the integration of the security and cashless vending system to include initial card encoding at the Customer Service Point for the 1500 plus staff.
A key requirement for Tube Lines was the introduction of a single multi application card for photo ID, access and cashless vending (something not offered by the previous system) and enhanced card-loading facilities.
The introduction of a cardholder database within the CardWise application also provided increased security and peace of mind for the cardholders, as lost cards no longer mean lost cash.
For the on-site caterers, Charlton House Catering, the detailed reporting of all types of card sales, including departmental hospitality using a separate 'second purse', was of key importance in effectively managing the catering business.
Tube Lines employees are able to load value to their ID/access/LEGIC smart card with cash, either notes and coins, or with credit/debit cards using Counter Solutions EFT system, which is accredited by the HSBC Bank.
Full audit history and a mini statement are also available through the networked Customer Service Points located on site.
Using IBM SurePos 500 Touchscreen EPoS terminals and CS desktop readers, which are also networked, the LEGIC card is accepted at all till points in the Restaurant, Coffee Bar and in all Vending machines on site.
Anthony French, Director at First City Care, said: üProviding Tube Lines with a single smart card solution for all their ID, access control and cashless vending needs was key to this project.
Employing the latest LEGIC contactless technology while working closely with Counter Solutions ensured the successful delivery of a tailor-made solution that exactly met all the client's needs.
Win Rogers, Business Development Manager, Counter Solutions Ltd, agrees: "Replacing the previous cashless provider with a new system and integrating it with a number of security and access control solutions, all to a tight deadline, required seamless co-operation.
The ease of implementation of all functions was made possible by the flexibility of the LEGIC contactless smart card system." Stephen Neff Vice President of Sales and Marketing at LEGIC Identsystems, concludes: "We've pleased that Tube Lines chose LEGIC to help provide their secure access control and cashless vending needs, and that our contactless smart card technology has been a major factor in the successful completion of this project.".
