Lafarge Roofing confirms that 61 privately-owned homes in Manchester's Harpurhey area will be re-roofed with the PV 800 photovoltaic (PV) solar roofing system from the Redland range.

Lafarge Roofing confirms exactly 61 privately-owned homes in the Baytree neighbourhood of Manchester's Harpurhey area will be re-roofed with the PV 800 photovoltaic (PV) solar roofing system from the Redland range The PV systems will generate electricity from sunlight and are part-funded by finance from the nationwide GBP500 million Pathfinder market renewal fund launched by John Prescott in 2003

The Baytree housing project represents a GBP250,000 supply for Lafarge Roofing, with PV partners Sundog-Energy of Penrith in Cumbria managing the installation based on designs by architects Cassidy Ashton.

The PV roofs, match-funded with grants from the Energy Saving Trust, will have the capacity to generate well over one-third of each household's average electricity consumption.

PV systems work all year round, because Britain's climate is surprisingly good for PV systems, as they work from light and not heat.

In fact, this technology works more efficiently in cooler temperatures.

The PV system will be installed on the Baytree homes to integrate directly with Mini Stonewold slates from the Redland range, replacing original natural slates.

All Lafarge Roofing's PV systems are backed by their unique 15-year guarantee for weathertightness, based on the British Standard BS 5534.

Baytree residents have been involved from the very start of the ambitious regeneration project, according to Manchester City Council, to create a design for their streets with a new layout and traffic calming.

Gardens have been added to some properties and extensive landscaped community areas created.
