Corby MP opens new LHA-ASRA affordable homes

Housing and regeneration group LHA-ASRA invited Rt Hon Phil Hope MP to visit the 27 new homes for affordable rent and sale through shared ownership sale.

Corby MP Phil Hope officially launched a scheme of affordable homes and met the new residents on Friday 27 March.

The homes range from two bedroom flats to large four bedroom family houses and will help meet the demand for affordable housing in the town.

Building contractor Lindum Sturgeon has installed energy-efficient light fittings, storm water storage, water-saving appliances and high levels of insulation in the homes.

This means the development achieves an EcoHomes rating of 'very good', which measures how environmentally friendly a home is.

The eco-measures, which include space for recycling bins and secure bicycle storage, reduce both the carbon footprint of the homes and residents' energy bills.

LHA bought the land from Corby Borough Council and nearby Woodnewton School, which previously held lock up garages and an under-used children's centre.

The money that the school and council received from the sale of land has been used to help build a state-of-the-art children's centre in the school grounds.

Corby Borough Council's Lead Member for Housing, Cllr Bob Eyles, said:"The launch of this new scheme is very good news for many local people who might be finding it hard to rent or buy new homes which are suitable for their needs and their pocket.

"Corby Borough Council is committed to providing affordable homes within the Borough and we are happy to be working with LHA-ASRA to do just that at Rowlett Road".

Working in collaboration with Woodnewton School, GSS Architects and LHA-ASRA, Lindum Sturgeon is delighted to have played its part in delivering this successful and valuable contribution to Corby's redevelopment programme.

The GBP4 million development was funded by LHA with the help of a GBP1.1 million grant from the Government's Homes and Communities Agency.

Of the homes, 14 have been made available for affordable rent to people on Corby Borough Council's waiting list.

Nine homes are for sale through the Homes and Communities Agency's New Build HomeBuy shared ownership scheme, where people buy part of the home with a mortgage and then pay less than market rent on the remainder.

The remaining four homes will be offered for 'intermediate rent'.

This enables people to rent a home at below market prices allowing the option to save money each month towards a deposit, which LHA will match fund for up to three years.

This gives the tenant a lump sum which can be used as a deposit to buy their home.

Alternatively, they can transfer the value to buy an LHA home in another area.
