Specifying sustainable building products
Lindab bases its business on sustainable, environmentally friendly systems in steel, focusing on minimising the use of raw materials, components, energy, packaging and transportation.
ncreasingly in the UK, Councils, Housing Associations, developers, house builders and architects etc are looking at ways on how to improve their environmental policy specifying sustainable building products for use on their refurbishment or new build projects Accordingly, manufactures are being challenged to demonstrate that their products are not only based on a sustainable resource but the companies themselves are committed to the environmental challenge

In the building industry there are a number of clear pointers to indicate whether a company is working towards sustainable practice - ISO 14001 certification being key.
This is an internationally recognised environmental standard designed to aid companies in the identification and assessment of their environmental impact and also their legal obligations.
This is achieved by implementing and monitoring a programme of continuous environmental improvement in both the production process and product development.

Housedeck Foundation System: Facing New Challenges
Developing housing, industrial and commercial sites on previously contaminated or brownfield sites, means the construction industry need to come up with innovative solutions.
Lindab, a Swedish building products company, bases its business on sustainable, environmentally friendly systems in steel, focusing on minimising the use of raw materials, components, energy, packaging and transportation.
Operating throughout Europe to ISO 14001 standards, Lindab is at the forefront of producing technologically advanced, innovative and eco friendly products for the building industry which offer real and sustainable alternatives to less environmentally friendly products such as plastic - without compromising performance.
Lindab processes over 130,000 tonnes of steel per year manufacturing and marketing a range of products including: ventilation ducting, rainwater systems, cladding, tile effect roof sheeting and light weight steel framing systems.
In the UK, Lindab's "Rainline" rainwater drainage system is attracting considerable interest as it ticks all the environmental boxes and provides a high performance solution for rain drainage for all types of buildings.
Manufactured from high quality, zinc coated galvanised steel, Rainline, according to UK Business Manager Jonathan Fennell is becoming the system of choice for many specifiers "not only because of it's green credentials - it's manufactured from 30% recycled material - but Rainline also out performs aluminium, cast iron and plastic systems, offering minimal movement, UV stability and unlike plastic, it will not crack, fade or leak " reports Mr Fennell.
Lighter and less expensive than traditional cast iron systems, Rainline is highly resistant to corrosion and is also self healing due to it's zinc coating -"we firmly believe in this product which is why we offer a 15 year comprehensive guarantee - Rainline is completely recyclable so no need to worry about disposal or the effect on the environment" concludes Mr Fennell.
Rainline was recently specified for a new build, Wirral Housing Association project which included the construction of a series of semi-detached bungalows to provide "lifetime" accommodation for families with severely disabled children.
The scheme which was designed to meet the affordability and sustainability brief in the use of construction materials, recently won the Green Apple Award for Built Environment 2007 and the Liverpool Daily Post's "Residential Development of the Year ".
Rainline has also been specified for Aldi Stores new build and refurbishment programme in the North East of England - Aldi specified the rainwater system had to be durable, cost effective and suitable for sustainable construction and also provide excellent whole life costings.
For products to be successful they also have to be easy to install - Rainline components are precision engineered to quickly and simply click together for a perfect watertight fit - there is no need for silicone on any of the connecting joints, because EPDM rubber seals are fitted to gutter joints and end stop component parts.
Lindab UK also offer, as part of their building products portfolio, - Construline - a range of hot dipped galvanised light weight steel framing suitable for exterior walls or internal partitions.
Topline, a steel, clay tile effect roofing system.
Sharing the same environmental benefits as Rainline, Construline and Topline provide the specifier with all the performance features of steel - strength, versatility, reliability and longevity.
Steel in the past has thought not to be suitable for external stud walls, primarily due to its excellent conductivity however Lindab produce Construline with unique profiles and elongated slots which greatly reduces the effects of cold bridging, thereby delivering comparable U values to traditional timber stud work.
Construline which can be used for load and non load bearing applications, has been designed to allows for the rapid construction of the external wall enabling the contractor to commence on internal work considerably sooner than with other systems, thus significantly reducing labour costs, build time and Health and Safety risks.
Topline combines the aesthetic appearance of clay tiles with the durability and corrosion proof benefits of steel.
Speed of installation-without the requirement to reinforce the roof is another key benefit in both material and labour costs .Available in two profile heights and lengths up to 6 metres, Topline is available in a range of colours and three polyester coatings - smooth, matt and HB.
When man first discovered iron, little did he realise that he had unwittingly stumbled on what was to become probably the most significant contribution to the success of the construction industry - steel.
With everyone now quite rightly concerned about sustainability and environmental issues and how they effect the specification of building materials, thanks to people like Lage Lindh who had the vision to start Lindab 50 years ago - a company which has evolved to become one of the largest producers in the world - steel is now once again, the new age material for the construction industry - even if its origins are 3000 years old.
