Linford Group has started work on the restoration and repair of Wollaton Hall, one of England's finest Elizabethan houses.

Linford Group has started work on the restoration and repair of Wollaton Hall, one of England's finest Elizabethan houses The £4.3 million contract will see restoration specialists Linford Group restore Nottingham's magnificent Grade I listed building to its former glory with extensive stone repairs and sympathetic refurbishment of the main hall, grounds and stable block

The contract includes extensive stone repairs to the exterior of the building, including repairs to the upper facades of the mansion house walls, the corner turrets and the reformation of the Wyattville chimneys.

Wollaton Hall was originally designed by Robert Smythson and built in 1588 by wealthy coal baron Sir Francis Willoughby.

In 1588 the house cost a massive £80,000 to build and eight years to complete.

The current conservation and restoration project is scheduled to be completed by Spring 2007.

David Linford, executive chairman of Linford Group said: "Wollaton Hall is a magnificent example of Elizabethan architecture and construction.

This conservation project will ensure that the house is returned to its original splendour and remains one of Nottingham's most impressive buildings." All buildings on the site are currently occupied so the Linford team will be working closely with everyone at the house to ensure minimum disruption to the everyday running of the hall and park.

Ron Ingles from Nottingham City Council said: "Linford Group has extensive experience in the restoration of and conservation of historic buildings across the country.

"We are delighted that the restoration of Wollaton Hall has started and look forward to opening each phase to the public as the project progresses." The original stone used in the construction of the house was supplied to the owner in exchange for coal from the pits of the Wollaton estate.

Linford has sourced stone that closely matches the Ancaster stone to ensure the restoration is as close to the original construction as possible.

In addition to the extensive exterior restoration Linford Group will be renovating various rooms at lower ground, ground and first floor levels to allow the reconfiguration of the museum facilities and interpretation of exhibits within the mansion.

The overall project cost for this phase of works for the restoration and repair of Wollaton Hall will be £9.3 million.
