Linford Group has completed the £1.6 million restoration and development of St Peter's Church in Ancoats, Manchester.

Building company Linford Group has completed the £1.6 million restoration and development of St Peter's Church in Ancoats, Manchester The 12 month contract, which began in Spring 2005, saw conservation specialists from Linford Group repair and restore the distinctive Romanesque church for Ancoats Buildings Preservation Trust

Built in 1859 St Peter's stands at the centre of the Ancoats Conservation Area and is a well-known architectural and social landmark in east Manchester.

The building was originally designed by Isaac Holden, the founder of the Manchester Society of Architects, and was the first Anglican church to be built in this predominantly Roman Catholic community.

The project involved extensive repair and re-pointing work to the external brickwork and the installation of a new structural ground floor.

Comprehensive timber repairs and re-roofing were also carried out to the apse (at the altar end of the church) and the aisle roofs.

Internally the centrepiece of the scheme has been the reinstatement of the long lost vaulted ceiling, using horsehair reinforced lime plaster on oak laths.

The project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which provided £905,000, and the Northwest Development Agency, which provided £704,000, with further financial support from the Architectural Heritage Fund.

Paul Baines, North West regional director at Linford Group said: "We are extremely proud to be part of the regeneration of Ancoats through the restoration of St Peter's".

"Our specialist craftsmen have spent a great deal of time and effort ensuring the building is faithfully restored to its former splendour".

""One of the highlights was seeing the renovation and installation of the original 4ft high ornate gasoliers, which originally provided ventilation to the whole building, to the church's ceiling".

Kate Dickson, director of Ancoats Building Preservation Trust said: "We are extremely proud to see the restoration of St Peter's completed to such a high standard.

The Linford craftsmen have taken exceptional care to ensure the building is returned faithfully to its original glory and the renovation work has set a very good precedent for other regeneration projects in the area.
