Gasoliers return to St Peters
A major milestone has been passed in the restoration and re-use of St Peter's in Ancoats, Manchester.
St George's Hall was originally completed in 1854 and is widely recognised as one of the finest neo-classical building in the world.
With its splendid chandeliers and gilded plasterwork it is one of the most impressive assembly halls in Britain and was regularly visited by Charles Dickens who held many readings in the small concert room.
It was also the world's first building to have an air conditioning system.
The restoration work will see Linford craftsmen clean and repair the internal stone work including the stone floors, ornate plaster cornicing and original holding cells.
As part of the original crown court the holding cells were used to hold some of the city's most prolific criminals and will be fully restored as part of the new heritage centre.
Replacement stone has been carefully sourced for all stone repairs to ensure a close match with the existing stonework.
Simon Linford, executive chairman at Linford Group said: "It is a real honour to be restoring such a beautiful and significant building.
St George's Hall is a superb example of neo-classical architecture which deserves to be carefully restored".
Councillor Warren Bradley, Leader of Liverpool City Council said: "St George's Hall is one of the city's most treasured buildings and its reopening in 2007 will be one of the highlights of our 800th Birthday year.
It is therefore very important we look after it for future generations.
"As Linford Group has worked on some of the UK's finest historic buildings such as Warwick Castle and Manchester's Rylands Library we are delighted to have them working on St George's Hall.".
