The 500-year-old building is set to undergo major structural correction and refurbishment over the next three years, with Linford taking on the first phase of the restoration, starting this March.

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, phase two will include an internal refit of the museum and exhibition centre.

Simon Linford, executive chairman of Linford Group said: "We're proud to be leading phase one in the restoration of this magnificent example of 15th century architecture".

"Southampton City Council has committed a great deal to this project and we are delighted to be working with them".

Councillor Sollitt, Executive Member for Leisure and Culture at Southampton City Council said: "Southampton is dedicated to preserving its heritage and Linford's specialist restoration experience will undoubtedly help us to restore Tudor House Museum to its original splendour".

The Tudor House, one of the few Southampton buildings to survive the bombs of World War II, was originally built for Sir John Dawtry, the Controller of Customs in Southampton.

The building became Southampton's museum in 1912, and has been a firm favourite with the city's schoolchildren ever since.
