North Wales building company Faenol Linford has brought its first two recruits on board for a new apprenticeship scheme.

Faenol Linford is the result of a partnership between Linford Group and the Vaynol Estate at Bangor, which created a fully-integrated building service capable of delivering major contracts across multiple sectors and disciplines, including new build, interiors, repair and restoration As well as creating a new building force in Wales, the venture included a commitment to developing construction and traditional craft skills in the area

Andrew Davies (18 years) from Buckley was the first recruit to a Faenol Linford apprenticeship in joinery.

Having worked on the development of Richmond House in Mold he is now working on the major redevelopment of the Steam Mill site in Chester.

The second recruit, Ken Price-Owen (47 years) from Caernarfon, is retraining with Faenol Linford with an NVQ Level 2 Wood Machinery in Construction.

He is currently working across North Wales as part of Linford's reactive maintenance contract with Wales and West Housing Association and Clwyd Alyn.

Paul Baines of Faenol Linford said: "Both Linford Group and the Vaynol Estate have a well-established commitment to training and skills development, which is critical if the modern construction and restoration industries are to tackle their growing skills shortages.

"When we set up Faenol Linford we were determined to ensure that it would contribute something to the region with a rigorous programme of training and apprenticeships, and we are delighted to have got that running." Andrew said: "I have always enjoyed making things so the building industry was my first choice for a career.

The Faenol Linford apprentice scheme provides me with the technical skills and practical experience necessary to succeed." Ken said: "When I was recently made redundant I took the opportunity to retrain as a wood machinist with Faenol Linford.

I'm probably the oldest apprentice in North Wales but I'm really enjoying myself.

The work is varied and interesting - one day I'm working on a roofing job, the next a joinery project." Paul Baines added: "The launch of Faenol Linford has seen us taking a major step forward for the region's construction industry, creating something genuinely exciting.

In our first year we have won a series of important contracts in the region, invested in new vehicles and training, and also been able to carry out significant work on the Vaynol Estate itself, including the sympathetic restoration of the old dairy cottage into new offices and facilities for the Faenol Linford team." The Vaynol Estate is one of the best-known estates in Wales, located between Bangor and Caernarfon.

It consists of 1000 acres of parks, farmland and gardens, and within the walls there are around seventy listed structures that range over a 500 year span.

The histories of the Vaynol Estate and the construction industry have been intertwined since the Middle Ages, when slate was first quarried from North Wales for roofing material.

Linford Group is a leading new build and restoration contractor operating as main contractor on a wide range of projects across the Midlands, North West and North Wales.

The company's record in Wales stretches back more than 40 years with a wide range of commercial, domestic and heritage work throughout the region.
