Lichfield-based building company Linford Group has won the contract to rebuild Edwards No 8 nightclub in Birmingham's city centre.

The building in Lower Severn Street was gutted by fire in November 2006.

The GBP2 million contract will see Linford erecting a completely new structure within the surviving facade, including complete groundworks, a steel frame, metal deck floors, stairs, windows and a new roof.

The contract is the latest in a series of major wins for Linford Group in Birmingham city centre, with nearly GBP10 million of new-build contracts projects currently underway.

Executive chairman Simon Linford said: "This is a uniquely challenging construction project, and finding the most cost-effective technical solution has required considerable experience and expertise in steel-framed structures.

"With no opportunity to close the surrounding roads in this busy city centre location, and as a result no opportunity to use a tower crane, the erection of the structural frame and the scheduling of all subsequent work have required meticulous planning".

Work on the contract, being carried out for Birmingham Property Group, started in August, and is due for completion in July 2008.

David Payne of Birmingham Property Group said "We are pleased to be working with Linford Group on this technically difficult redevelopment of such a well known local landmark building.

It's another exciting development for Birmingham Property Group and will see this historic listed building brought back into active use at the earliest opportunity.
