GBP8.5m state-of-the-art social care and housing development in Shotton is to be named Llys Eleanor, after the former colliery which used to be near by.

The Extra Care housing scheme for older people is being built on the land off Shotton Lane in a partnership between Clwyd Alyn Housing Association, part of the Pennaf Housing Group, and Flintshire County Council At a celebration to mark the start of work on site today, it was announced that the name of the new development would pay tribute to the heritage of the area's mining past

The Chairman of Flintshire County Council Cllr Ann Minshull said: "Today I've had the pleasure of naming Flintshire's first Extra Care scheme Llys Eleanor .

Eleanor was the name of a local colliery that provided work and housing for local people, and so it seemed appropriate to reflect the past in our future.

It is a pleasure to see that work is now underway in building this flagship scheme for Flintshire" Councillor David Wilkes, Flintshire County Council's Executive member for Adult Social Care said:" Today it's a great step forward in developing housing which promotes wellbeing and adds positive opportunities to the extra years of life that we now all expect.

I welcome this scheme as a reflection of Flintshire County Council's commitment to the promotion of independence, choice and wellbeing for Flintshire residents of all ages." Mr Graham Worthington, chief executive of the Pennaf Housing Group said: "This is an exiting project and we are very pleased to be working in partnership with the County Council, pioneering a new age of independent living opportunities for older people in Flintshire.

"A big Thank You must also go to local people living near the site for all their input.

We're really pleased that the local heritage has been incorporated into the naming of this development and look forward to exciting times ahead." The project will provide fifty, one and two bedroom self contained apartments with on site facilities to include; restaurant, lounges, hairdressing, treatment rooms, hobbies, gym and activity rooms.

The two storey building will be set in attractive grounds and have a wealth of hi-tech security features including state of the art door entry with visitor recognition, a flood detection system and emergency call facilities.

The occupants will have their own personal care package tailored specifically to their needs and to enable them to live in a safe and comfortable home with care and support on site 24hours a day, should it be needed.

The partnership was successful in its bid to the Welsh Assembly Government for grant aid towards this substantial project with around half being funded through grants and the remainder funded by Clwyd Alyn through private finance.

Contractors working on the site will be The Linford Group.

To mark the start of work on site the partnership behind this centre of excellence an open afternoon was held at St Ethelwold's Church, which stands next to the development site, where local people had the opportunity to meet with developers and contractors to find out more about the scheme.

The apartments are already creating a great deal of interest.

Dozens of people have already joined a register expressing an interest in living in the apartments when they open later in the year.
