Lowe Group are committed to compliance with new legislation by providing training to ensure that personnel achieve the appropriate qualifications to legally undertake the work involved.

Domestic electrical installations could prove to be a minefield following the introduction of Part P of the Building Regulations (applicable to most work undertaken from January 1st 2005) However, the Lowe Group, a leading electrical safety training specialist, are committed to making sense of any confusion surrounding this new legislation by providing training to ensure that personnel achieve the appropriate qualifications to legally undertake the work involved

The definition of a domestic installation includes combined domestic/business premises with a common power supply, common access areas in flats, as well as sheds, garages, greenhouse and other outbuildings.

Work undertaken including alterations, additions and new installations after the distributors meter, can be self certified by individual contractors and firms that are registered with a Government Authorised Competent Persons Scheme.

Anyone not registered with an approved scheme must notify a building control body (ie local council) before any work commences.

The replacement of socket outlets or ceiling roses, and minor work undertaken in areas other than a kitchen or area classified as a special location may be exempt from the Part P legislation.

It is a criminal offence not to comply with the legislation and work that does not conform can incur initial fines of up to £5000 for each contravention, with an additional £50 per day for any work that remains unrectified.

Electrical qualifications are a necessary pre-requisite for membership of all Government approved Competent Persons Schemes, and the Lowe Group has been involved in the development of a nationally recognised level 2 Domestic Electrical Installers qualification in association with EMTA Awards Limited (EAL), NICEIC and ECA.

Courses to obtain this qualification are held for non-electrical personnel as well as electricians at all of the Lowe Group's training centres.

Training is also available for qualified technicians who will need to demonstrate an understanding of the new amendments to the building regulations.

This course covers this aspect only from the EAL level 2 Domestic Electrical Installers qualification and is also nationally accredited.

Other associated courses available include: City and Guilds 2381 - wiring regulations, which is requested by almost all schemes as a minimum standard of qualification for electricians.

City and Guilds 2391 - inspection, testing and certification, a qualification being requested by some schemes in addition to the 2381.

Further information is available on request.
