A dramatic Luxalon wave form ceiling designed by Saunders Partnership architects has created a unique feature at the entrance to the new Tesco Extra at Coventry Arena - the largest Tesco store in the UK.

The ceiling demonstrates the creative and technical possibilities opened up by Luxalon wide panel ceilings.

The concept was developed by the project architects, Saunders Partnership in conjunction with Luxalon.

"We designed the wave form ceiling to add interest to the building and act as a reference to the shape of the canal behind the building," commented the project architect.

"The ceiling offered an original way to get north light into the mall while the wave design created continuity between the outside canopies of the development and the inside of the mall.

The ceiling is made up of three consecutive panels, each 2466 mm long.

The panels are clipped to 300C carriers which had been curved to a 17,000 mm radius - both convex and concave - to create the undulating effect.

In this busy retail environment, sound control was essential so the perforated panels incorporate a non-woven tissue bonded to the inside face for enhanced acoustic performance.

Saunders Partnership were very pleased with the slim plank system and shadow edge detailing which enabled them to achieve their design objectives.

As the panels are made to measure they minimise the need for jointing - helping to achieve the smooth, closed surface and speeding up installation.

The Luxalon curved panel concept is based on a standard product that provides an extremely cost-effective solution.

The panels enable designers to create concave, convex and undulating ceilings which provide superb visual affects and the practical accommodation of varying heights.

If required, individual panels can be removed easily, allowing access to services in the plenum.

The ceilings are available in a wide choice of standard colours.
