A distinctive curved wood ceiling from Hunter Douglas has contributed to the welcoming atmosphere of a special school in East Sussex and brought a host of practical benefits The 200m2 Luxalon solid wood linear open ceiling system was installed at Chailey Heritage School, a nationally recognised non-maintained special school catering for children of all ages with complex special needs

On a single site, education, residential, therapy and health services work together with families to meet the needs of each individual pupil.

The school has been undergoing a refurbishment programme including updating the 16+ department and building a new Primary department.

The architects and client chose a Luxalon solid natural wood ceiling system to help achieve an appealing, homely environment.

The open linear ceiling incorporates an acoustic fleece infill to meet the acoustic requirements within Building Bulletin 93.

This high level of sound absorbency is a key benefit in an educational building, or any public area.

The layout of the ceiling, which is curved in both plan and section, was designed to allow a graceful transition from a two-storey height at one end of the building to a lower level at the courtyard entrance.

All the panels can be easily demounted for access to services.

The Larch wood ceiling is one of a range of species designed to complement all architectural styles.

With a unique blend of warmth, aesthetic and technical benefits including enhanced acoustic performance, wood is the ideal material for eco-friendly interiors.

The project architect was Hazle McCormack Young and the ceiling Contractor, Parker Ceilings.
