Industry's First Warm White LED
Lumileds have receives an Innovation Award from Wall Street Journal for industry's first Warm White LED. Now the incandescent-style glow removes barriers to LED adoption in general lighting.
Lumileds Lighting has received an Innovation Award from The Wall Street Journal Europe for its new warm white Luxeon LED, the first solid-state light source to replicate the warm glow and accurate colour rendering produced by incandescent and halogen bulbs The award, earned in the competition's semiconductor category, reflects Lumileds' achievement in providing an interior-friendly alternative to the cooler blue tones of conventional white LEDs and thereby enabling lighting designers to take advantage of the longevity and energy savings of LEDs in general lighting products

Lumileds Ships Industry's First Warm White LED
Lumileds Lighting is now shipping a warm white version of its high-brightness Luxeon LEDs, becoming the first manufacturer to deliver a warm white emitter in production quantities.
"This award recognises the profound, paradigm-shifting impact that warm white LED technology promises to have on the lighting market," said Michael C.
Holt, CEO of San Jose-based Lumileds Lighting.
"By delivering incandescent-grade illumination in an LED for the first time, we have opened the door for manufacturers to create a new generation of lighting fixtures that consume much less energy, occupy less space because of an LED's small footprint, and virtually eliminate the need for bulb replacement." Lumileds' Luxeon warm white product broadens the applications for LEDs because its market-leading colour rendering index (CRI) of 90 makes objects appear to have a much richer range of colour than conventional LEDs, while its industry-first 3200K correlated colour temperature (CCT) eliminates the blue overtones of standard 5500K cool white emitters.
These effects, achieved by altering the composition of the phosphor coating used on each emitter, significantly increase the consumer appeal of indoor fixtures powered by LEDs.
The Luxeon warm white product also shares the performance benefits of the entire Luxeon series.
Luxeon LEDs are the world's brightest and most degradation-resistant solid-state light sources, generating up to 60 times more light than similar products and offering an expected 70% retention of initial light output through 50,000 hours of operation under typical conditions.
That far exceeds the long-lasting brightness capabilities of other LEDs and translates into a useful life span of at least 11 years, based on an average operation of 12 hours per day.
The award was formally announced in London at a November 27 ceremony sponsored by The Wall Street Journal Europe.
Lumileds began shipping the Luxeon warm white product in October.
