Geosynthetic material supplied by Maccaferri , specialist in retaining structures, soil reinforcement and erosion protection, was used to reinforce river banks in the picturesque Norfolk Broads Working with Broadland Environmental Services , a joint venture between Nuttall and Halcrow, Maccaferri has supplied 1,440 sq metres of Enkamat A20 to reinforce river banks around the Haddiscoe Island, near Great Yarmouth

The project is part of a design and build scheme spanning 20 years, covering the entire Broadland area.

The scheme involved the construction of new flood banks in addition to strengthening and repairing the existing river banks.

Over several decades, scour, wind, waves and climatic change, coupled with boat wash from holiday-makers has caused significant erosion of the river banks, significantly increasing the risk of flooding.

The work at Haddiscoe Island, still on-going, involves repairs to the banks of the rivers Waveney, Yare and also the 'Haddiscoe Cut'.

Enkamat A20 was placed on top of the indigenous Norfolk Reed (phragmites) rhizomes which have grown through the matting to reinstate the natural river bank.

Providing reinforcement for rivers and watercourses, Enkamat A20 is designed to assist nature in establishing a strong network of natural grasses and plants to provide permanent natural protection against erosion.

A key factor in specification for the Norfolk Broads was that the design must have minimal impact on the landscape.

A year since installation, vegetation is now well established and the river banks show no signs of further erosion.

Manufactured by Colbond Geosynthetics, Enkamat A20 has been specially developed to provide river bank protection.

A three-dimensional random polyamide matting, it is factory filled with a mineral filter of stone chippings bound by bitumen to create a secure, flexible and water permeable matrix for vegetation to grow through.

Providing erosion protection for velocity scour and wave action it is also non-toxic and approved for use in potable water reservoirs.

Colbond Geosynthetics manufactures and supplies a range of speciality geosynthetic products for civil engineering applications.

The range of products includes Enkamat, Enkadrain, Enkagrid, Colbonddrain and Armater.

Based on polymer technology, these products are used all over the world for erosion control, drainage, waste containment and soil reinforcement and improvement.

Maccaferri specialises in the supply of gabions, geotextiles, geogrids and geomats.

In addition to a full range of products for gabion, timber crib and segmental concrete retaining walls, the company also offers a wide choice of solutions for soil reinforcement and erosion protection, including an in-house design and advice service.
