Bespoke curtain walling and a highly specialised sliding door system have been supplied by MagHansen to arguably the most influential developer active in the field of inner city redevelopment.

Urban Splash has scooped numerous awards and set new benchmarks with both the quality and the inventiveness of its schemes; often involving the conversion of derelict industrial properties However, Timber Wharf is Urban Splash's first new-build residential development

At Timber Wharf in Castlefield, Manchester, the regeneration company headed by entrepreneur Tom Bloxham MBE created a mixed use development on eight storeys with apartments above live work/commercial space; which includes Urban Splash's own headquarters.

MagHansen's £1.5 million contract included the supply of visually striking and technically advanced glazed doorsets.

With either one leaf fixed and one sliding, or double versions of this arrangement, these offer plentiful natural light and an open aspect for the new-build apartment interiors.

These were sourced through HansenGroup member company, KuhnHansen MgbH in Germany.

The opening leafs are 2775 mm high and 1500 mm wide, containing very heavy, sealed units to optimise both acoustic and thermal performance.

Nicola Hopwood at Glen Howells Architects, comments: "There was an issue with the height of the sliding glass doors and we were liaising with several glazing suppliers at an early stage of the project.

Essentially MagHansen was willing to work with us on meeting the technical challenges - going to Germany for a system which no-one else could match - and to keep within the project's cost limitations.

We are very pleased with the final appearance." MagHansen also enclosed the two sides of the central core to Timber Wharf using its highly aesthetic Cellglazing system; presenting very slim sightlines.

Then the glazing specialist fabricated the curtain walling required for the end elevations of the building using its System 51 profiles featuring a pressure plate and face cap.

The curtain walling contains 6-12-6 IG units having a low-E inner leaf.

MagHansen is now involved with a further Urban Splash project in Budenberg HAUS Projekte Altringham.

MagHansen is part of the Anglo-Scandinavian HansenGroup, one of Europe's leading fenestration specialists in curtain walls, commercial windows, steel doors and fire resistant structural glazing.

The Group has annual sales of some £100 million and employs over 1,000 people.
