Fight to eradicate MSD in construction industry
Marshalls plc, the UK's leading manufacturer of hard landscape products, has launched a campaign to eradicate Muscular Skeletal Disorders (MSD) out of the construction industry.
They also reflect the cultural heritage of the area as the stone type comes from the same geological era as the lower coal measures that were mined around Castleford.
Channel 4 commissioned independent television company Talkback to produce a series of documentaries on the people involved and progress with the projects.
They will be presented by Kevin McCloud [of Grand Design's fame] and will faithfully reflect the urban regeneration of this West Yorkshire town with the aim of empowering people to drive the improvement of their own towns and cities.
However, Channel 4's role is not just one of visual documentation.
The company is working in partnership with regional and national agencies involved in regeneration on 11 community improvement projects, which were identified as priorities, and are supported by the local community.
Commenting about the regeneration programme David Barrie, Executive Director of the Project from Channel 4 said: "Some projects are about improving the quality of life, environment and investment potential of the town; other projects are about supporting neglected neighbourhoods, improving the safety and well-being of the community and providing better opportunities for young people." The principal contractor for the New Fryston Village Green Scheme is Apex Pierse .
Where they are building a range of outdoor experiences created and developed by internationally renowned landscape architectural firm, Martha Schwartz and consultants BDP.
Its design has also been developed through an extensive process of community liaison and consultation.
The developed New Fryston village green will provide a focus and meeting point for the local community.
Plans include seating areas for people to enjoy the surroundings, play areas for local children and a dedicated bridle-path.
John Pegg of Martha Schwartz, said: "The entire green is conceived as a site-specific art piece that contains features such as 'The Gouge' (play area), which refers to the activity of digging, and 'The Cairn' (stage or performance area), refers to piling up that which has been excavated.
Both features represent the cultural history of the site, paying respect to the heritage of the village whilst also helping to create a new and improved future." The New Fryston Village Green Scheme is due for completion in early 2005 and will be one of the first projects to be finished under 'The Castleford Project' programme.
