Marshalls plc, the UK's leading manufacturer of hard landscape products, has launched a campaign to eradicate Muscular Skeletal Disorders (MSD) out of the construction industry.

Marshalls plc, the UK's leading manufacturer of hard landscape products, has launched a campaign supporting the compliance of the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) 'Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992', in the fight to eradicate Muscular Skeletal Disorders (MSD) out of the construction industry The initiative comprises an advertising campaign and is further sustained by a bespoke web page created by the company (please click the link www.marshalls.co.uk/mh ), which gives advice and guidance on the subject

Leading with the headline; 'Mechanical handling protects his back and covers yours', the campaign advocates the use of mechanical handling techniques for heavy side materials such as kerb and drainage products when installing them on site.

Supported by a striking x-ray image of human backbone made from kerb, it reminds the installer, and contractor, of the volumes of kerb they could potentially lay in a life time and evokes the weight and stresses of performing such a repetitive task.

Running in the national construction trade press for four months, the initiative tells people of how the HSE is vigorously enforcing the legislation of none compliance with penalties comprising fines and the halting of projects.

For a number of years, Marshalls has worked proactively with several leading material handling equipment manufacturers to create bespoke machinery to lift and move its own range of kerbs including Beany Block, Marshalls' combined kerb and drainage system.

Through the campaign it now wants to raise the awareness of all involved in the construction industry to take the strain out of lifting by using mechanical handling, which is the only way to ensure complete compliance with the 1992 regulations, and a best practice procedure in eliminating the number of sufferers of MSD in the UK.

Steve Hook, Marshalls commercial marketing manager said: "Research undertaken by the HSE shows MSD is the principle reason for people having to leave the construction industry, and is the single biggest cause of accidents and injuries in that field - accounting for more than 35% of recorded three day accidents.

"As a manufacturer of these materials we are committed to helping the supply chain operate in a safe environment.

It will also highlight the further benefits of using mechanical handling techniques including ease of installation; less product waste; improved installation times; reduction of overall cost and the importance of improved health and safety of the workforce." Marshalls is committed to constantly investing in new technologies and working with all partners in the supply chain to develop product innovations that break new ground and set the standard within the industry.
