Marshalls plc's Natural Stone Division has supplied over 54 tonnes of natural stone blocks for The Castleford Project's 'The Green' regeneration development at Ferry Fryston, Castleford.

Marshalls plc's Natural Stone Division has supplied over 54 tonnes of natural stone blocks for The Castleford Project's 'The Green' regeneration development at Ferry Fryston, Castleford As part of the transformation a number of the blocks, weighing up to 5 tonnes a piece, will be strategically place around the area to create Yorkshire's first Volcano for the local children to enjoy and play on

The feature is all part of a new public play area at The Green and includes further attractions such as Nessie, Blazer Rock, The Swinging Bowl and The Enchanted Forest Tree House and Shelter being constructed by principal contractor Apex Pierce .

Development of the site is the culmination of more than two years of intensive work involving the Friends of The Green, local Schools, Wakefield MDC, and Parklife , London based landscape designers.

Further key improvements for the project include; a new safe entrance, improved bowling facilities and a landscaped central area with a real focus on the artistic involvement of local young people.

Previously the site was a strip of parkland in one of the most deprived parts of the town and Wakefield District.

Lack of investment and anti-social behaviour had turned the place in to a derelict landscape.

The Friends of the Green, a new group formed after an event run by The Castleford Project wanted to see the area become a safe, well-designed public space.

The progress of The Green and all of The Castleford Project's schemes is being filmed by production company Talkback UK and will be screened by Channel 4 as a major new series.

The programme will be presented by Kevin McCloud [of Grand Design's fame] and will faithfully reflect the urban regeneration of this West Yorkshire town with the aim of empowering people to drive the improvement of their own towns and cities.

The Castleford Project is a collaboration between Channel 4, and key local and national agencies involved in regeneration and the local community.

Other partners include the Wakefield District Strategic Partnership, Yorkshire Forward and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) Arts Council England.

The Green's project funders include; the Coalfields Regeneration Trust (CRT), English Partnerships (EP), Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN), Surestart, The Arts Council, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, Ibstock Cory Environmental Trust, European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Living Spaces and the Single Regeneration Budget.
