McAvoy provided a turn-key solution to BAM Plant, who provide accommodation and welfare facilities on a nationwide network to BAM Construction and BAM Nuttall.

The McAvoy Group's AV modular division were contracted by BAM Construction part of one of Europe's largest and most respected construction enterprises, Royal BAM Group to design, deliver and install 18 bays of modular offices and welfare facilities onto a 4mtr high steel gantry, provided by BAM's own in-house specialist division, BAM Plant.

A tight lead-time of 6 working weeks from cutting steel to client occupation was the challenge.

Combine this with the need for the modular complex to meet stringent fire regulations, to be installed over two consecutive weekends and coupled with London's wide load movement restrictions and last but not least, 8am to 5pm working meant the project had to be planned with almost military precision.

McAvoy were asked to provide a turn-key solution to BAM Plant, who provide accommodation and welfare facilities on a nationwide network to BAM Construction and BAM Nuttall.

McAvoy's design and fabrication team were in regular contact with the client and our fabrication sub-contractors and at some points were managing design changes in real-time as both modular bays and staircases were already in the manufacturing stages.

Key subcontractors were selected for their knowledge of London's transport requirements, modular installation experience and large structural steel staircase fabrication abilities.

The site itself is extremely compact and all vehicles needed to be "marshalled" into the narrow entryway off a busy street.

A 150 ton mobile crane was used to hoist the units upto 18 metres into the air, guided by the installation team to nestle onto the gantry with only 250mm clearance at either side from adjacent multi-storey buildings.

The 4 storey steel staircase "pods" were installed in sections onto prepared foundation plinths with each finished staircase weighing 3 tons.

The client has not received one complaint from adjoining hospital or residents and no health and safety issues were reported.

D-day for hand over was 23rd March 2009 and client signature for acceptance of modular complex was received at 1pm.
